Las Vegas was great. The gals all drove down, whereas I stayed on a day longer, having just got back from London, and flew down that morning.
We were playing an end-of-conference party for a sex workers rights conference organized by the Desiree Alliance and $pread magazine (desireealliance.org/conference.htm) - who are partly people we know in SF - in fact Scarlot Harlot helped us get our first gig three years ago.
The party was at a gay club called Gypsy. We had to take down all our equipment including our PA, so spent a lot of the afternoon setting it all up and sound-checking etc. - which paid off later on as the sound was pretty good. It also helped having Dragan out in the audience checking and mixing.
Then we were supposed to go on at 10:30pm, but there was no-one there then (!). The conference attendees were still at a pool party back at the hotel, and people kept telling us how Las Vegas is a "late" town - meaning no one comes out before 11 or 12. So we delayed and finally went on at midnight to a suddenly respectable crowd of 200 or so.
This was the very first gig for our new drummer (Natalie) after only a week rehearsing with us (well not with me - I was in London) - and she did really great! In fact one friend told us afterwards that it was the best set she'd ever heard. The audience loved us and we sold a bunch of CDs (our current yardstick). Then we hung around and caught Juba of Deep Dickollective (thanks for the props!) and Miss Indigo Blue (who is super kewt).
This could be a big moment for us... For most of the last year or so, we've been scuffling about trying to compensate for not having a drummer - doing acoustic gigs sometimes, using a drum machine a few times (yuk!), playing with various stand-in drummers (such as Steve who played on the new CD and is great - make no mistake). But that meant we were reluctant to accept too many gigs / really get out there. Now we've got a few weeks practice before San Diego Pride (July 29th) where Natalie can learn more material - and then we can really start booking - for example doing colleges in the fall...?
