So... we've been booked to play Folsom Street Fair...
Now we have to start thinking about what to wear.... Leather? - almost certainly. But with lots of skin showing so we don't get too hot?
Maybe we need some roadies?

Sat, August 13, 2005 - 5:46 PMBut it turns out they want us to play at 11:40 _am_ !!! Will there be anyone there then? -

Re: dress for folsom...
Sat, August 20, 2005 - 12:18 PMThat's actually not a bad time to perform, even if it is underattended. I find that folks who arrive early are actually listening. As the day progresses, the audience becomes more drunk and less attentive. You'll probably get actual long-term audience members for your band, rather than folks who don't even know who they're listening to. -

Re: dress for folsom...
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 2:08 PMHmmmm. I was thinking about playing in a corset, but I'm worried about what the buckles might do to my guitar. And, how the hell am I supposed to work my pedals in platforms? Such a dilemna...

Sun, August 21, 2005 - 4:53 PMA friend suggested we play in our jammies / nighties and fluffy slippers at that time... ;-)

Mon, August 22, 2005 - 11:49 PMYou can tape a piece of cardboard to the back of your guitar to avoid the scratches. Enjoy!

Re: dress for folsom...
Thu, September 8, 2005 - 11:47 AMWhich stage are you playing on? My band will be on the 7th street stage at 12:25 - and I've been dying to see you perform, so I'm hoping you're on the same stage!
The last time we played FSF was in 03, and we had a 12:30 slot. The crowd was still thin at that point - but we had some pretty dedicated listeners who stayed for our whole set, rather than wandering off, which was nice. My unsolicited advice? The slippers & nighties sound fun (and cozy, I must admit), but I'd go for leather & skin - as though it was pm, not am. Best way to get the audience going!
See you there -

Thu, September 8, 2005 - 1:29 PMWe're playing the 12th Street stage (at 12th and Folsom) at 11:40am (www.folsomstreetfair.com/fair-....php).
We're scheduled to finish at 12 noon - so we should get a chance to come along and catch you guys... -

Re: dress for folsom...
Sun, September 18, 2005 - 7:11 PMYeah, I saw that they finally posted the schedule - bummed we're not on the same stage! Do come by if you can to catch our set - it'd be fun to get to meet up.
Thanks,
Pixie
BTW - I don't have any of your CDs yet - and I'd be happy to trade for one of ours if you have any with you at the fair...

Fri, September 9, 2005 - 2:09 PMPixie,
Hey there! You guys played Pride Main Stage last year, didn't you? I remember listening to you while we were selling discs after our slot. Something about ".....I wanna be your sex toy....." Am I right? You guys were great! I'm jazzed to hear that we're doing Folsom together. So, it's clearly assured that we all have to hang out afterwards!
See you then!

Sun, September 18, 2005 - 7:09 PMHi Sarafina,
Yep - that'd be us! And Sex Toy is midway through our set, so you should be able to make it in time! Good to hear we're remembered fondly! We haven't played at all in the last year, since we were working on getting our first CD out. Definitely come by & let's hang out! I wish I could make your show - I have to check in by 11:30 at our stage :-(
BTW - we'd be happy to open for you sometime!
See you at Folsom,
Pixie

Re: Folsom! Grrrr!
Sun, October 2, 2005 - 10:47 PMFolsom was crap – well the show part of it was anyway – the rest of the day was fine.
Essentially Folsom is not set up for proper rock and roll. They use a “festival” format, which means bands share a common back line and don’t get a sound check in the interests of quick turn rounds – but they try and run with five minutes between bands – which might be OK if all you have is a couple of guitars are using their drum kit, but we have special MIDI guitar set-ups and two keyboards and loads of pedals etc. Which means we inevitably took more than five minutes to be ready, and they cut us back form a measly twenty five minutes to twenty –and then (we suspect) gave us a five minute warning even earlier, with the result that we only got to play four sounds instead of the six planned.
And despite the racks of high-end sound equipment, the monitor sound on stage was awful. For example, they gave Emme a pretty high drum mix (which is good) and Tori got to hear some of that at the back of the stage, but there were no drums in the monitors at the front – which meant that Marilyn, Shawna and Sara were essentially playing without a beat. And there were no other instruments in the monitors hardly at all, and very little vocals – which meant we were playing pretty blind (or is that deaf?). Surprisingly enough, people out in the crowd said the mix was pretty good- which is a testament to how we can now play reasonably well in adverse sound circumstances – but it is hard o really generate enthusiasm and energy when you can’t hear anything (and aren’t even sure if you’re on the beat?!).
So… despite the early hour (we got on at 11;45am) there was a reasonable crowd – although looking round from the stage we could recognize a lot of faces. A mix of friends and fans isn’t a bad thing – and we’re grateful they made the effort to come out.
Anyway… after the set and a hurried scramble off the stage, we took a while to chill out backstage, scmhooze with the next band on etc. – and then jumped into Folsom proper- albeit several hours earlier than previous years. -

Re: Folsom! Grrrr!
Fri, October 14, 2005 - 12:03 PMNot too much - and I totally understand! The monitors sucked on the 7th Street stage too. As far as gear, there are only three of us, plus the dancers - so while we have tech equipment, there wasn't alot of it and we did pretty well even without the sound check. But give me an hour for set-up and a good monitor mix any day! Meanwhile, our stage was an hour late getting set up - all the bands got moved up and one or two headed over to your stage to fill space there. A happy result of all this - there were more people there by the time we played.
Hope you'll be there to try it again next year!

Re: Folsom! Grrrr!
Sun, October 16, 2005 - 9:39 PMNo, I've really noticed when going to ALL outdoor events here in the bay area that in general the sound is pretty average to downright poor quality.
You get a much better outdoor setup on sound when playing in towns known for having lots of musicians like Austin, Nashville, and New Orleans (god bless it).
Everywhere else I think it's harder to find great sound people for a competitive price (not as many around to bid) and they figure that most of the audiences won't notice or care...and I guess that's true for the most part.
Also, it's pretty windy here sometimes - more so that those other places I just mentioned and I think that affects the outdoor sound too.
